Head Teacher/P.E.   Connie Wagemanconnie.wageman@stmaryswayne.org

I am Connie Wageman the Head Teacher/P.E Teacher at St. Mary's School.  I am very happy to be working at St. Mary's School since this is where my formal education began.  I was fortunate to have the opportunity to attended St. Mary's School in grades 1 through 6. At the conclusion of sixth grade my family and I moved to Norfolk where I was able to attend and graduate from Norfolk Catholic High School.  Following graduation, I found myself back in Wayne where I attended Wayne State College and received my degree in Physical Education and Health.

I have been married for 18 years to Chuck Wageman.  We have three children, Jessica who is a junior, Kristina who is a freshman, and Scott who is a 7th grader.  They all attend Wakefield Community School and are involved in a variety of activities.  Chuck and I are owner/operators of a small dairy operation near Emerson, NE.  I enjoy attending the various activities that my children are involved in and am most relaxed sitting on a tractor helping my husband with a variety of farming chores.  I continue to look forward to working with the students, staff and families of St. Mary's School.

I grew up on a farm northeast of Laurel and at 13 we moved to town. I graduated from Laurel-Concord High School and then continued my education at Northeast Community College.  I finished my degree in elementary education at Wayne State College.

I have been married to Jeff for twenty-four years.  We have two children, Emily who is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska Kearney, and John who is a junior at Wayne Community School.  I started my teaching at District #33.  I am looking forward to starting my 6th year of teaching 1st/2nd grade at St. Mary's School.

3rd & 4th Grades – Anne Sty – anne.sty@stmaryswayne.org

I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago.  I was very fortunate to attend Catholic schools all the way through college.  My faith became an everyday part of my life and still is.  I strongly believe that we are all called upon to pass on Christ’s teachings to our children.  My husband, Dave, and I moved to rural Wakefield nine years ago.  We have two grown sons, Rob and Mike, who live in Phoenix and our dog, D.J.  This is my seventh year teaching at St. Mary’s and my fourth as the 3rd/4th grade teacher.  During my free time, I enjoy reading, gardening, sewing, and crafts.

5th & 6th Grades – Scott Olson – scott.olson@stmaryswayne.org

I was born on August 4, 1977, in the small town of Niobrara, Nebraska, which is located near the Missouri River and the mouth of the Niobrara River.  I enjoyed living in Niobrara because I spent most of my leisure time at the river.

Living in Niobrara, I found that the summer time was my favorite season.  For five years, I worked at Niobrara State Park as a lifeguard and also helped with the raft tours down the Missouri River.  The children at the pool made every day an enjoyable experience.  I love being around children and that job gave me that opportunity.

My parents are teachers and were my greatest influence to become a teacher.  I attended Wayne State College after high school.  In the fall of 2002, I graduated from WSC with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education.

My hobbies include spending time with my wife and son, reading, fishing, hunting, and boating.

Language Arts – Michelle Carlson – michelle.carlson@stmaryswayne.org

My husband, Chad, and I were married in June of 2000 and we have lived in Winside since then.  We have been blessed with two sons; Alex, who is almost three and Tyler, who is our newborn.  I grew up in Crofton, NE, attended Saint Rose of Lima Catholic School, graduated from Crofton Community High School and moved on to attend college at Wayne State.  I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education and elementary art education in December of 2002.

My education has come full circle, from being a young student in a Catholic school to becoming a teacher in a Catholic school.  I have taught language arts (reading, writing, spelling, phonics) to the first, second and third graders at Saint Mary’s for a year and a half. I enjoy working with the students of my parish and community and see myself as a fortunate teacher to work in such a unique atmosphere.  Our students receive personal attention in a nurturing, Catholic environment in which the needs of all learners can be met, academically and spiritually.  I look forward to what each new day brings at Saint Mary’s School!

Music – Monica Jensen – monica.jensen@stmaryswayne.org

My husband, Dennis, and I and our three children have lived in Wayne for the past 12 years.  Our son, John, will be a college sophomore at UNK and our twin daughters, Rachel and Sarah, will be high school seniors.  We are members of the First United Methodist Church, but I claim St. Mary's as my second church family and feel privileged to be a part of the teaching staff at St. Mary's School.

I grew up in South Dakota and received my degree from Northern University in Aberdeen, South Dakota.  We made our home in the state for several years, teaching in the public school system there and later taking classes at USD.   I also had the opportunity to teach music at Salem St. Mary's School in Salem, South Dakota.  I have been a part of the staff of Wayne's St. Mary's School for eight years, teaching music and playing for the children's weekly masses.

I believe the public schools in the Midwest have a great curriculum to offer students; however, I can attest to the fact parochial schools, such as St. Mary's, not only have a great curriculum, but also the opportunity to give their students a strong base for their lifelong faith journey.  At St. Mary's, we are fortunate to be able to talk about one's beliefs while in the classroom setting, helping each student's faith to become a real part of his  or her daily life.  Our small class size allows students to receive the individual attention that is so important during the crucial elementary years.  The opportunities for growth given to our students abounds, and I feel fortunate to be a part of this process and a member of the St. Mary's family.
